Dr Joshua Loh is the Medical Director at Capital Heart Centre. He is a Senior Consultant Cardiologist and an experienced Interventional Cardiologist.

Education and Training

Dr Joshua Loh graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the National University of Singapore. He was conferred the Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from the National University of Singapore and a member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK. He completed his specialist training in Internal Medicine at National University Hospital, Singapore, and thereafter the advanced specialist training in Cardiology, sub-specializing in Interventional Cardiology at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS).

Dr Joshua Loh was awarded the Academic Medicine Development Award and completed two years of advanced fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology and Clinical Research at the MedStar Washington Hospital Centre, MedStar Heart Research Institute, and Georgetown University Hospital at Washington, DC, USA, under the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Studies (ACGME) program. While at Washington, DC, Dr Joshua Loh trained with pioneers in the field of Interventional Cardiology and gained extensive experience in complex coronary and structural interventional procedures using the latest technology while appraising the latest clinical and research evidence.

Professional Recognition

In recognition of his significant professional contributions to the field of Cardiology, Dr Joshua Loh was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh, UK), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (USA), Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (USA), Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, Fellow of the ASEAN College of Cardiology, Fellow of the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, and Fellow of the Asian Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology

Clinical Expertise

Dr Joshua Loh’s expertise lies in managing coronary artery disease with coronary interventions. He is experienced in using contemporary technologies in evaluating and managing coronary artery disease. He is proficient in providing coronary functional and physiology assessment using the flow wire, intracoronary imaging using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS), performing complex coronary interventions such as left main disease, bifurcations, chronic total occlusions, bypass graft interventions, multivessel coronary angioplasty and treating severely calcified coronary artery disease with specialized devices such as Rotational Atherectomy and Intravascular Lithotripsy.

Dr Joshua Loh is experienced with the use of the latest generation drug-eluting stents, bioresorbable scaffolds and drug-coated balloons. He uses the minimally invasive approach in the majority of his cases using the radial artery access and the distal radial artery access. Dr Joshua Loh is a strong advocate of evidence-based practice and uses technologies and medications that are backed by clinical data and international practice guidelines.

Clinical Practice

Dr Joshua Loh spent almost two decades in public service. Before moving to private practice, Dr Joshua Loh was a Senior Consultant Cardiologist in the Department of Cardiology, National University Heart Centre, and Visiting Consultant at the Division of Cardiology, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He held appointments of Patient Safety Officer in National University Hospital and Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

While at National University Heart Centre, Singapore, Dr Joshua Loh provided care for general cardiology patients, and performed interventional procedures such as coronary angiography and angioplasty. He was part of the Western STEMI network, which provided  round-the-clock acute heart attack intervention (“Primary PCI”) for western Singapore. Dr Joshua Loh was involved in hospital and regional committees overseeing the heart attack service. He also supervised the post- myocardial infarction service, concentrating on patient care after their heart attack. Dr Joshua Loh was the NUHCS representative in the Singapore Cardiac Databank committee which oversees nationwide data on coronary angiography and angioplasty.

Dr Joshua Loh belonged to a core group of Cardiologists managing patients requiring critical and intensive care in the Coronary Care Unit. Dr Joshua Loh established the invasive Percutaneous Pulmonary Thrombectomy service for critically ill patients with pulmonary embolism requiring intervention procedure. Dr Joshua Loh was accredited and was part of a select group of Cardiologists performing invasive pericardiocentesis for patients requiring urgent pericardial drainage.

Dr Joshua Loh is a strong advocate of and is active in improving patient and clinical care. He was accorded three Quality Improvement awards by National University Hospital, Singapore.

Research Interests

Dr Joshua Loh is prolific in scientific research and has authored or co-authored more than 90 scientific publications in renowned medical journals. He is serving in the Editorial Board of the Singapore Medical Journal as the Subspeciality Editor for Cardiology, the Editorial Board of Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine, and is a manuscript reviewer for several other journals.

Dr Joshua Loh was the Principal Investigator in multiple international and local clinical trials related to percutaneous coronary intervention (angioplasty), acute coronary syndromes/ acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and evaluating new technologies in angioplasty (stenting). He is regularly invited to present as a faculty speaker in international scientific meetings in the USA, Europe, Asia Pacific and SouthEast Asia.

Medical Teaching

Beyond his clinical work, Dr Loh is also passionate about medical education and held the appointment of Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). He conducts clinical teaching to medical students, Internal Medicine Residents and Cardiology Senior Residents. Additionally, he is an examiner in the final MBBS examination for graduating medical students held by NUS.

Dr Joshua Loh trained many Interventional Cardiology fellows (trainees) from Singapore and abroad, and held several peer-to-peer teaching sessions in regional and international conferences. He is involved in the planning and execution of several cardiology conferences and is an invited faculty speaker and key opinion leader — regularly invited to perform live case demonstrations in complex coronary angioplasty techniques to audiences in Europe, USA and Asia. Dr Joshua Loh is a regional proctor for complex coronary interventions and has performed teaching cases in hospitals in Asia.

Cardiology Society Involvement

Dr Joshua Loh is active in the local and international cardiology societies. He is a Council Member of the Singapore Cardiac Society (SCS) with the position of Honorary Treasurer. He served as the Organizing Chairman for the SCS Annual Scientific Meeting for 3 consecutive years from 2015-7.

Dr Joshua Loh also holds appointments as a board member of the Chapter of Cardiologist, College of Physicians, under the Academy of Medicine, an executive committee member and Zone Vice-President of the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, and a board member of the Asian Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology.

National Service

Major (NS) Dr Joshua Loh serves as the Commander of a Medical Unit in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), where he is responsible for overseeing the medical response during crises and national emergencies.

As a Medical Unit Commander, Major (NS) Dr Loh leads a team of Medical Officers, Paramedics, and medical support personnel in life-saving urban search and rescue (USAR) operations at disaster sites, mass casualty incidents, and large-scale national events.

Major (NS) Dr Joshua Loh is trained in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and ensures that his team is proficient in first aid, triage, and advanced life support techniques. His team is equipped to manage a wide range of medical situations, from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions, utilising up-to-date medical practices.

In recognition of his great service, Major (NS) Dr Joshua Loh was awarded the SCDF Commendation Award in 2020.

Activities and Interests

Dr Joshua Loh is an avid sportsperson with interests in outdoor sports. He was a competitive school runner, and now does regular road- and trail- running to keep fit. His sports interests are diverse, from various outdoor sports to racket games to skiing. Dr Joshua Loh enjoys reading widely in medical literature, current affairs, non-fiction and fiction genres.

Dr Joshua Loh is actively involved in various media platforms and a variety of print publications such as The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Asia One and magazines like Expat Living, Portfolio Magazine, PRIME and Global Health Asia-Pacific.
